Rack'em
A Handy Dandy Handgun Rack

By Frank Ettin ()

Okay, I admit it. I have [just] a bit of a "pistol acquisition" problem. But I'm not alone. There are plenty of others around with this affliction. That's right. I'm talking to you, and you … and you there trying to hide behind that target stand - fess up. We have the forgotten addiction. There are no twelve step programs for us.

But let's face it; one of the biggest problems brought about by our condition (as long as you don't count poverty) is where to put all those handguns. I don't know about you, but I had 1911s stacked like cord wood, and the inside of my gun safe was like a flea market so disreputable that the fleas left. I longed to get organized.

Then while surfing the Brownells website, I stumbled upon this neat handgun rack made by the Versatile Rack Company of Vernon, California. Made from bent metal rod covered in vinyl to prevent scratching your guns, it's available to hold either four or six pistols. In addition, the Versatile folks offer a clever gizmo that allows you to stack two racks. A few minuets with a tape measure revealed that my gun safe was two of the four gun racks deep and that I had room to stack. And so it came to pass that through the magic of the Internet, orders were placed and the wherewithal to bring order out of chaos (at least in my safe) appeared on my doorstep.

The racks themselves come fully assembled and will conveniently hold a wide variety of handguns.

The stacking fixture is nicely packed with everything needed including easily followed instructions.

In a couple of minutes I had a couple of two tier racks.

The Versatile people recommend that when racks are stacked, load the bottom tier first and put lighter guns on top.

And now my safe is nicely organized.

The racks and the stacking hardware are available directly from the Versatile Rack Company (see the links at the end). The four gun rack lists for $29.99 and the six gun for $39.99. The stacking kit is $17.00. The racks are also available from Brownells, but I didn't see the stacking system in the Brownells website. MidwayUSA appears to offer both racks and the stacking system. There seems to be some variation in pricing, so shop around.

If you have several handguns and you like things orderly, these racks from Versatile Rack Company can help.
